AMREF's approach to health system strengthening in east Africa targets communities; we reach, respect, and become a part of them to create change from within. We strive to close the gap between communities and formal health systems by partnering with the very poor, the most vulnerable, and the most remote communities. We have successfully developed community-based health care models that seek solutions to priority public health challenges including maternal and reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, health worker training, safe water, and clinical outreach. We seek to equip communities with the knowledge and skills to maintain their good health and break the cycle of poverty.
